Portfolio

My fascination with woodworking began in 6th grade. At first just the smell of it. Then the idea of creating something of myself and giving it up as a gift to somebody else. The struggle to connect with the otherness all around me was made bearable through art.

I have since wandered in all directions (a more thorough bio) but continue to find inspiration and come back to what I love to do most: work with my hands, learn from and teach others who share the passion.

I have been a woodworking instructor, a furniture maker, a timber framer, and a boat builder. Below is a collection of my work.

Me

Furniture

My woodworking career started with furniture projects: tables, chairs, lamps. Although they may be simple every-day objects, they taught me that there is nothing simple about imagining, creating, finishing, and perfecting a piece of furniture. My favorite design concepts are ones that mimic the free flowing forms found in nature and repurpose materials that have been discarded.

Couch-matched coffee table

Coffee table made of white oak. The positive imprint of the coffee table matches the negative pattern of the couch

Hour glass book shelf

Meant to look like an hour-glass from the side, this lazy bookshelf incorporates three central themes in my life: books, time, and mathematics

Glass bar table and stools

Maple slab (both bar top and stools). The legs are 3/4 pipe. The glass is routed in and sits on the inside lip of the maple slabs

Scrap Bin pine coffee table

Question mark lamp

Top view of lamp (made of walnut). The slit on the inside of the lamp was routerred out so that the bulb could slide up and down the question mark.

Hypercube lamp

Tig welded tesseract with a 60W bulb illuminating the inside cube

Houses

Building a house and woodshop has always been a pipe dream. I am forever grateful for my friends and family who helped me make it a reality, and to Will and Michelle Beemer who took me in as an apprentice Timber Framer and taught me the trade.

Timber-framed Woodshop/House

Timber-framed shop. The downstairs serves as a woodshop, the upstairs a loft/living space

Timber frame Homes and structures

A cruck-framed house built during the apprenticeship

Sail boat

I am a mediocre sailor at best, but I loved the idea of building something big. Something that would require my commitment for a much longer period of time than any project I had undertaken in the past. Something that would teach me about patience, precision, dedication, making and fixing mistakes, and working with friends.

Other

My favorite projects of all are gifts commissioned by friends, or other useful objects/tools of a bygone time.
